If you have a stump in your yard, you probably want to know one thing first: how much is it going to cost to get rid of it? For most residential properties in Calgary, stump grinding can range from around $150 for a small, easy-to-access stump to $1,200 or more for a very large or difficult stump.
We also use stump diameter as a starting point. Most stump grinding jobs in Calgary work out to roughly $8–$25 per inch, depending on the stump, access, surface roots, rocks, grinding depth and cleanup.
The per-inch number is useful, but it does not tell the whole story. A 24-inch stump in an open front yard can be a very different job from a 24-inch stump behind a narrow gate, surrounded by landscape rock and large surface roots.
Stump Grinding Cost in Calgary
These are rough ranges, not fixed prices. Photos and access information are usually enough for us to narrow the number down before we come out.
Why Can Two Stumps the Same Size Cost Different Amounts?
Diameter gives us a good starting point, but it does not tell the whole story. A few things can make a noticeable difference.
Access
A stump in an open front yard is usually pretty straightforward.
Backyard stumps can take more planning. Gates, stairs, retaining walls, narrow walkways and tight corners can limit which machine we can use.
We have multiple stump grinders for different types of access, including equipment that can fit through openings as narrow as about 29 inches.
If the stump is in the backyard, send us a photo of the access route and the narrowest gate or opening.
Root Flare and Surface Roots
Some trees have a fairly compact stump. Others spread out considerably at ground level.
Large root flares and exposed surface roots mean there is simply more wood to grind. If there are roots you specifically want removed, include them in the photos when requesting your estimate.
Landscape Rock
Rocks around the stump can make a big difference.
Stump grinder teeth are built to cut wood, not stone. Decorative rock, buried gravel and stones around the root flare can slow the job down and cause significant wear on the machine.
If the stump is sitting in a rock bed, let us know ahead of time.
Grinding Depth
For most residential jobs, we normally grind approximately 6 to 12 inches below grade.
That is generally enough if you are planning to restore the area with soil, grass or a garden bed.
If you are putting a patio, retaining wall, new tree or another structure in the area, tell us before we quote the job. You may need additional grinding.
Cleanup
Grinding a stump produces more material than most people expect.
The finished pile is a mixture of wood chips, roots and soil. A large stump can leave quite a bit behind.
Some homeowners are happy to keep the grindings. Others want the area cleaned out so they can bring in soil and finish the landscaping. Cleanup and removal can be added to the estimate if you want it.
How Should You Measure a Stump?
Measure across the stump near ground level, including the main root flare. Do not just measure the narrower cut surface at the top.
For example, a stump may measure 20 inches across where the tree was cut but spread out to 30 inches or more where it meets the ground. That lower measurement gives us a much better idea of how much material actually needs to be ground.

Is Stump Grinding the Same as Stump Removal?
People use the terms stump grinding and stump removal interchangeably all the time.
For most Calgary properties, when we are removing a stump we are grinding the visible stump below grade rather than digging the entire root system out of the ground.
The stump grinder removes the main stump and, where required, larger surface roots. The deeper underground roots usually stay in place and break down naturally over time.
Completely excavating a stump and its entire root system is a much larger job and usually is not necessary for a normal residential yard.
What Does a Small Stump Cost?
A smaller stump with easy access may be around $150 to $250.
The lower end would generally be a straightforward stump in an open area without extensive roots, rock or cleanup requirements.
Even small stumps still involve bringing the machine to the property, setting up and completing the work, so there is a practical minimum cost to doing the job.
What Does a Medium Stump Cost?
A stump between roughly 12 and 24 inches will often fall somewhere around $250 to $400.
This is a common range for residential properties. A clean stump with easy access may be toward the lower end, while a wide root flare or more difficult location may move the price upward.
What Does a Large Stump Cost?
Once you get into the 24 to 36-inch range, a rough price of $350 to $600 is more realistic.
Larger stumps take more grinding and create considerably more material.
Very large stumps over 36 inches can be anywhere from roughly $500 to $1,200 or more, depending on the tree and the site. At that size, photos are much more useful than trying to calculate the job from diameter alone.
What About Multiple Stumps?
If you have several stumps, show us all of them when you request an estimate.
It is often more economical to deal with several stumps during the same visit than to schedule them individually.
Even if you have a couple of small ones you are unsure about, include them in the photos. Once the grinder is already on the property, they may be fairly easy to add to the job.
Is It Cheaper to Leave the Wood Chips?
Usually, yes.
Leaving the stump grindings on the property means less labour and no hauling or disposal.
Some homeowners use the material elsewhere on their property, although fresh stump grindings are not always ideal for filling the hole if you are immediately trying to grow grass.
If you want the site cleaned out and ready for fresh soil, we can include cleanup in the estimate.
Can You Grind a Stump in a Backyard?
Most of the time, yes.
Backyard access is one of the most common questions we get. Our smaller stump grinding equipment can fit through gates as narrow as approximately 29 inches, but the entire route matters.
When sending photos, show us:
- The gate or narrowest opening
- The walkway or route into the backyard
- Any stairs along the route
- Tiered garden beds or retaining walls that affect access
- Any obstacles or tight corners
That usually gives us enough information to know which machine will work.
Can You Plant Another Tree Where the Stump Was?
Sometimes, but planting directly in the exact same location is not always the best option.
Stump grinding removes the main stump below grade, but larger roots can still remain farther down in the soil. The ground can also settle as the remaining roots and wood break down.

How Do I Get an Accurate Estimate?
Tell us the stump’s diameter, measured across the widest part near ground level, including the root flare.
We also need to know:
- How many stumps you need ground
- Whether they’re in the front or backyard

- Any stairs, tight corners, landscape rocks or large surface roots
- Whether you want the grindings left on site or cleaned up
- Whether you plan to replant in the same spot
These details help us estimate the work and choose the right machine.
